The Dark Shadows movie, the latest movie from the mind of Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp, is based on a gothic soap opera from the late 60s and early 70s. However, the new movie has basically nothing to do with the old TV series, and is trying to separate itself as much as possible from its origins, making the film a dramedy.

In the movie, Johnny Depp plays a 200 year old vampire named Barnabas Collins who rises out of his grave in 1972, and engages in antics with his modern descendants. The feel of the movie has been described by many as "gonzo comedy", but children and their parents alike will probably find the film amusing and enjoyable. Every year since 1945, Australia has held a festival celebrating Australian authors and their books. The entire community comes together to honor Australian authors and illustrators with a nationwide Book Week. Children in schools learn about these Australian men and women and become introduced to their books in hopes of instilling the importance of reading.

Each Book Week has its own unique theme. First, a national theme is chosen by the Children’s Book Council of Australia and then members of the National Council vote to approve it. In year’s past, themes have covered everything from “Good Books are Good Companions” in 1952 to “Bookaleidoscope” in 1997. This year’s theme is “Champions Read”. Children's Book Week is a festival that is held in Australia yearly and is approaching its 67th anniversary this year. It is a week of celebrating famous Australian authors and illustrators as well as the general appreciation of books and the importance of reading. This year book week is being held from May 7-13. Local schools and libraries often organize literature oriented events and activities. Some locations may designate a particular theme based on a certain genre. The flapper and gangster era of the 1920’s made a strong impact on the role of women. The 1920’s costumes are still very popular almost 100 year’s later. The flapper look were as figure hugging, revealing and suggestive as the law would allow in the 1920’s.

So you have been invited to a Fancy Dress Party, or maybe you need to find an outfit for a Hen's Night or Bucks party. Whatever fancy dress event you are going to there will always be the biggest asked Question – To hire or to buy??
Everyone you speak to will have a different opinion on whether you should hire or buy, but in my opinion the best thing you can do is way up the pro's and con's and then make a decision that you feel comfortable with, that also suits your wallet and budget. To help you with making that decision Fashion For Fun have put together some tips, guidelines and advice on Hiring and Buying that special Fancy Dress Costume.

When hiring a Fancy Dress costume it is usually required that you go into the shop in person to select and try on an costume. One of the major cons on hiring a costume is that Costume hire shops are very limited on the costumes that they stock, for example they may only have one Snow White costume to choose from when there are so many available to purchase online. You may also want a certain style of Snow White Costume – you may want a sexy version or a more conservative version, and it is unlikely that a hire shop would stock both.

The other major draw back in hiring is the sizes. I know from experience when hiring costumes myself in the past they usually stock standard sizes (one size fits all) so the likelihood of the costume fitting you correctly is unlikely. The problem with this is that you are not able to alter the costume in any way. Hire costs usually start from around $60 and you are always required to pay a bond on the costume which is usually the same as the hire price if not more. It is common practice of a hire shop to have you sign an agreement that you will cover the full price of a brand new costume if the costume is lost or damaged in anyway.

As we know Fancy Dress Party's, Hens Nights or Bucks Party's are paired with loads of alcohol and junk food – try not spilling any of that on you! Or what about the crazy dancing or antics that you get up to – I wouldn't be doing your famous signature “Worm” or the costume could get damaged! I know the last thing I would be wanting to do at a party is being worried about damaging the hired costume.

Just because we are in Australia doesn't mean we can’t celebrate Halloween like they do in the USA. Halloween is my Favourite celebration of the year. It’s the one time of year when you can dress up knock on someone's door and demand a lolly. But Halloween can be fun for the adults too, Party Party Party!!

Around the world there are hundreds of Fancy Dress Parties taking place around the Halloween month.

How do I plan my next Halloween Party you ask? Well you have come to the right place. Start with a scary invite to your Fancy Dress Party. It’s best to have the party take place at night so all the Fancy Dress Costumes can come to life and look that bit scarier. Its also the best way to show off your carved lit pumpkins!

You can deck out your house with Jack-o-Lanterns, trick or treat candy boxes, paper skeletons, spider webs and some creepy music - its sure to impress your guests.

Fairytales have been around for many century's. They are passed from generation to generation through love, laughter and most importantly bedtime stories. What is more surprising is that fairytales were not originally created for children, and have little do do with fairy's. The first known fairytales were not as enchanting and “Happily ever-after” as we know them today.

Large numbers of Fairytale stores were written in the 1700's but as the years and the centuries pass the story is changed and edited, removing the darker and more gruesome elements of the stories.

Fairytales as we know them today are full of Princesses, Princes, Dwarves, and Enchanted characters. All the stories give us a warm fuzzy feeling inside and make our imagination run wild. And we all love the famous last words Happily Ever-after!

Some examples of famous fairytales are Alice in Wonderland, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and my favourite Beauty and the Beast. We sell all these fairy tale fancy dress costumes and much, much more.

Kids Star Wars costumes are a big seller, and rightly so! The star wars movies are popular, and the costumes provided from the moves are fantastic for kids fancy dress parties.

Star Wars theme parties are a great idea for parents because there are so many character costumes to choose from (although you might find 5 or 6 Darth Vaders running about!).

We now have a number of different stock status messages, so you can see exactly what is in stock in Australia, or has to be ordered in from suppliers.

4 Great fancy Dress Party Theme Ideas

Ok, so you have decided that your next party will by fancy dress. Costumes will be required, and everyone has to dress up.

But what on earth are you going to choose as a theme? Most people fall into two categories at this point, those who have too many ideas, and those who have none!

So here are a few great ideas and suggested costume ideas to match, to narrow your choices. And don't worry, there are plenty of online adult costume shops that stock these sorts of items.

Angels and Demons

This is idea is one of my favourites, as it gives people two 'sides' to choose from. Those that want to be Angels can buy Adult Fairy Costumes, Angel costumes or something similar.

Wands would be good, large costume wings will stand out, and a little (or large!) halo to wear on top of your head will just cap off the Angel fancy dress outfit.

Demons can be just about anything with horns and a tail! You can quite readily find great Demon costumes in bright red colours, or maybe bend the definition a bit and go for a Gothic costume, Vampire or something similar.

The Retro Party

Get down and boogie!

Retro fancy dress parties really open the door to lots of great costumes. You can go for the disco cowboy look, girls can dress up in 'go go girl' costumes (complete with knee high boots!), or you can go for the John Travolta look, with tight pants, tight shirt with lots of chest hair.

Or, just to be a little different, how about a roller girl costume? Turn up on skates to really get people's attention!

The other great option is a Hippy Costume. Peace man! grab some big gold chains, a short tight skirt, some platforms, and boogie with the best of them as a 60's Hippy.

A 'P' Party

Got you thinking now haven't I? A 'P' fancy dress party is for any costume that starts with the letter 'P'.

P is a great choice because there are lots of costumes that begin with P, such as Pirate costumes, Princess costumes, pimp, porn star(!) and more.

This odea gives people a good number of choices, and you will surely find a wide range of costumes at a party like this, some will be very creative!

Movie Themes

There are heaps of great movie themes that you can choose for a fancy dress party. Harry Potter, Star Wars and other great movies can give you lots of ideas. Either tell people to come as any movie character, or be more specific.

Often younger kids in the same age group will all like the same show or movie, so Dora or Diego might be good ideas for costumes, or Harry Potter.

This is a tough thing to do for a guy. How do you buy lingerie for your girlfriend or wife without getting the wrong size, the wrong style, or wrong colour!?

We know what it is like... It can be daunting and scary, and the whole idea of buying lingerie is to surprise and impress, not to make yourself look like an idiot.

So, what can you do to reduce the risk of buying the wrong thing?

1. Sizing

This is probably the hardest thing to get right, so we will tackle this one first. Lingerie sizing, depending on the product, can be tough to get spot on.

To start with, the best way to get the right size is to sneak a look at the sizing for the underwear that your partner currently wears. In particular, pay attention to the brand of each size (as sometimes sizes can vary a little by brand).

For example, if your partner already has some Leg Avenue branded lingerie, note the sizing of it!

If you can find the right size, then you have really made life a little easier for yourself. This opens up your choices to more size sensitive items such as bras, panties, corsets and more.

If you can't get a good feel for your partner's true size, then you do have other lingerie options. Choose items that are more loose fitting like chemise, camisoles, hosiery items etc.

2. Style

Unfortunately, this is up to your male deductive powers. Have you noticed what fashions your partner likes? Does she already wear some styles of lingerie? Or none at all?

If she doesn't wear much lingerie, then you should probably start with something a little less risque, like a Camisole set. Then you can see how she reacts, and start thinking about your next purchase!

If your partner does already wear lingerie then you probably have a good idea of what she might like. In this case, go for some lingerie that is a little more daring or sexy in this case!

3. Colour

There are lots of different styles and colours of lingerie and hosiery, and the best way to ensure you get the right colour is either stick to the basics (black or white, you simply can't go wrong with those), or have a look at her wardrobe.

What regular clothing colours does she like? If its blue, then maybe choose some blue lingerie.

You could also be influenced by the season. Red for Christmas on Valentines day for example.

Our advice is if you have gotten as far along in the purchase process to decide on colour, then you are doing great. Have fun and choose something sexy. Lingerie can be a great way to spice up your love life, and make your partner feel special.
